Friday Harbor, WA, Coho Restaurant was recently awarded the 2012 Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator and is featured in the August 31, 2012 issue of Wine Spectator .  This is the fifth consecutive year that Coho has been an award recipient.

Coho’s wine list, culled from the great producers of Washington, Oregon, and California along with a fine selection of international wines, is specifically selected to complement the range of menu offerings.  Coho’s owners seek out small producers who create authentic handcrafted wine using natural techniques which convey a sense of place.  This parallels Coho’s philosophy with food, as evident in their participation in the Island’s Certified Local Program.  (This is an Island-wide program that promotes the use of local agricultural products by restaurants.)

“We are passionate about food and wine; we like top quality and good value,” says Anna Maria de Freitas, one of Coho’s co-owners.  “We seek out sources for exceptional foods that are close to home, but our wine list is international in scope, with a strong Mediterranean focus, to match the diversity of Executive Chef Bill Messick’s menu preparations.  Our goal is to make wine accessible to our guests; we make every effort to help our guests choose the perfect glass or bottle to accompany their meal as well as their budget.” Coho’s growing wine list of 320 bottles includes sparklers, whites, reds and dessert wines from the great wine producing regions of the Pacific Northwest and the world including Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and South America.

Coho Restaurant opened its doors on April 11th, 2008.  Set in a historic Craftsman house with just nine tables, it offers intimate dining featuring Pacific Northwest cuisine with a Mediterranean flair. Coho’s Chef creates exciting menus developed around the seasonality of fresh ingredients from the surrounding Islands. Each showcases simple and artful fare that allows the flavors of the individual ingredients to resonate on the palate. Coho’s catering service includes selections from the restaurant’s extensive wine list to complement every occasion.
